Hungarian Shield (Ungrischen Schilt)
Hungarian Shield (Ungrischen Schilt)
The Hungarian shield, as it is called in the 1440’s Gladiatoria Fechtbuch, is a small and lightweight shield that likely filled a similar role to a buckler when it comes to fighting.
Not much else is known about them, and there’s no extant examples left sadly so these are based upon those seen in Gladiatoria (MS Germ.Quart.16, Folio 55), albeit without the large spike at the front, which is difficult to replicate in a way that would be safe to use.
These shields have been design for use in HEMA/Re-enactment. Made from multiple layers of plywood nailed and glued in a form to curve the shield, they are faced and backed with linen with the front primed with gesso and painted. The grip and adjustable arm strap are attached with copper rivets, and the edges are finished using rawhide that is stitched through the shield with sinew to give a more robust product.
